LEBANON — Moving Day at Shaker Run Golf Club kept the battle for first place tight, and left many other players shaking their heads after Saturday’s third round of the Middletown Men’s Golf Championship.
Club professional Tyler Geswein made no apologies for the tough pin placements.
“... We could’ve made the pins easier, but this is a championship for the Middletown city title,” he said. “Ninety percent of the players in this tournament have single-digit golf handicaps. It’s moving day, and we wanted them to earn this.”
Second-round leader Michael Roberts remained atop the leaderboard, and still has a four-stroke lead. Before Saturday’s round at Shaker Run, Roberts held a four-stroke lead over defending champion and three-time city champ Tim Sorrows. After Saturday, T.J. Selby moved into second place with the low round of the day, an even-par 72.
Roberts shot a 3-over 75 for a 216 total after three rounds. Selby now sits alone in second with a 220.
“I’m hitting it horribly, but I’m still putting pretty well,” Roberts said. “(Being the leader) didn’t change my approach, I was still trying to hit fairways and greens and take things one shot at a time. I’m pleased with a 75, just because of how bad I hit it. Obviously I would’ve loved to have gone lower.
“I know Weatherwax pretty well, so I might be a little more aggressive (today), and try and make some more birdies.” Roberts said.
Selby seemed almost surprised to move into second.
“I was scrambling a lot, and I had a lot of up-n-downs,” Selby said. “I hit the driver well today. That’s a good sign. If I can work on my approach shots, I think I’ll do well tomorrow.”
Sorrows said Roberts stayed consistent with his game, but wanted to credit Selby with the day’s only even-par round.
“T.J. played incredibly well. It’s the first time I played with him, but he had it all going. ... He played a phenomenal round,” Sorrows said.
Despite carding a 10 on a par-4 (Woodlands No. 3), Sorrows still shot a 77 to remain in third place, six strokes behind Roberts.
T.J.’s dad, Tal Selby, is in fourth at 232. The Middletown Women’s Golf Championship began play Saturday at Weatherwax. Nicole Dalton’s 88 tops the leaderboard by two shots over Yoon He Winkle and Lexie Fields as final-round play takes place today at Weatherwax.
