Knucklehead of the Week
Marshawn Lynch is a fabulous football player and, according to teammates, a great guy. He just doesn’t like the media. Fair enough, but the best way to make media types scatter to the buffet line is to answer questions with boring cliches. Instead, Lynch made a spectacle of himself by saying little on Super Bowl media day. “I’m just here so I won’t get fined” was the line he repeated 29 times. The Seahawks star was funny in his “interview” with ESPN’s Kenny Mayne. And there was that weird Skittles ad. So Lynch will talk, as long as he gets paid.
I went to Dot’s on Saturday to stock up on supplies — and I was not alone. I think there were more people waiting at the meat counter than there will be guarding the footballs prior to tonight’s big game. In other words, a small army.
It's Super Bowl Sunday, and because I dislike the Seahawks and the Patriots, I'll be as cranky as Robert Kraft all night. Perhaps a Bud Light commercial will make me grin. I hope so.
I think the Patriots are the more complete team, and the Seahawks won’t make a legendary QB look bad two straight years. New England wins, 27-23, and Tom Brady will celebrate by sticking a knife into the game ball. With a Braveheart yell, he’ll hold the deflated leather trophy aloft for all to see.
The mysterious case of Detwon Rogers has been solved. Kind of. Archie Miller says the transfer won't see any PT for UD this season due to an "academic situation." That's code for "suspended." The Flyers roster at one time included two guys who couldn't make grades and two who (allegedly) are criminals. Throw in Ryan Bass (concussions, left town) and you'd have a decent lineup.
Fifteen of 22 pollsters who cast ballots in the Ohio high school basketball polls did not vote Wayne No. 1 in Division I last week. This despite Wayne victories over the No. 1 team in the country and the No. 1 team in the state in a six-day span. The Warriors' two losses came early, both by five points.
National Signing Day is Wednesday, and it seems like Ohio State will be adding 73 5-star recruits. The Buckeyes had a large, talented class lined up before they won the national title. They've added several guys in recent weeks, leaving the rest of the Big Ten in the rear-view mirror.
How powerful is the College Football Playoff? The guys who run it had the guts to say no to ESPN. The network that runs sports wanted next season's semifinal games moved from New Year's Eve to Jan. 2. The CFP said no, which makes me like it even more.
Trending up: Devin Mesoraco, Kyrie Irving, Katy Perry. The Reds catcher signed a four-year, $28 million deal. Not bad for a kid who batted .261 for Dayton in 2008. Mesoraco has developed into one of baseball's best-hitting catchers, belting 25 homers in 384 at-bats last year.
Trending down: Rasheed Sulaimon, Lance Armstrong, Rita Jeptoo. Duke bounced Sulaimon from its stuffy basketball program because he wasn't meeting "necessary obligations." Perhaps the junior refused to wear Sperry boat shoes, turn up his shirt collar and play croquet.
