Thursday’s been a difficult day to find positive news on the Reds, and not just because they’re on the verge of starting yet another rookie pitcher today, when Sal Romano takes the post in a 3:10 p.m. tilt at Colorado. Apparently, the Nationals are sniffing around with interest in Cincinnati’s Raisel Iglesias.

And perhaps Washington is not the only potential suitor for the Reds’ closer.

Iglesias is atop the short list of Cincinnati pitchers who’ve had fine seasons. In 34 games, he has forged an ERA of 1.59 with 15 saves and a 2-2 record. In 39.2 innings, he’s allowed just 21 hits, struck out 46 and walked 16.

Already, the thought of the 27-year-old Cuban right-hander departing is not making Reds fans happy.

And this:

Fans are no dummies. Given that the Reds have Iglesias under control through the 2020 season at friendly salaries (assuming he continues to pitch the way that he has) of $4.5 million, $5 million and $5 million over the next three seasons, he wouldn’t likely come (or go) cheaply to another team.
