Springboro’s Holweger goes for 40

Drew Holweger has had a hot shooting hand before, but nothing like Saturday against Vandalia-Butler.

A junior guard and son of Springboro coach Mike Holweger, Drew went for 40 points in a 79-59 defeat of Butler in the GWOC/GMC Holiday Hoops Challenge at Fairmont. It was the first of five games at Trent Arena. Five other GWOC/GMC boys high school basketball games also were held at Mason.

Holweger unloaded an awesome display of deep range shooting and didn’t let up.

“I got some good looks and good screens,” Drew said. “I knew real quick things were going my way. My teammates did a good job of finding me, too, especially when I got going early and they just stuck with me.”

This is Year 2 for Mike Holweger as Springboro’s head coach. The Panthers (4-4) have good height — 6-foot-5 front-liners Bryce Crosen, Justin Rigg and Nick Pluta — and are deep in the backcourt. And then there’s his boy.

“It’s not really my second year,” said Drew, laughing. “It’s been since I was about 6. … I know the system.”

A lefty, Drew buried seven 3-pointers on the Aviators (1-4). When Butler determined he wasn’t going to get a shot off, he knocked down 11 of 15 free throws.

That added up to a career high for him and marked-man status for the remainder of his Springboro career.

“He has been,” Mike assured. “He’s a great shooter. He’s a pure shooter. He has an offensive mentality. We were able to get good stops and get out in space in transition. When he gets his feet set, we feel like he’s as good a shooter as there is around.”

Drew also is Springboro’s leading scorer at about 14 points per game. But three other Panthers have previously scored 20 or more points. That’s the kind of offensive balance that his father had been hoping for this season.

“We also had our concentration level where it needed to be defensively,” Mike said. “Everything fed off of our defense, which is key for us.”

It was the first time Springboro had won consecutive games. The Panthers will be looking to extend that modest win streak in a two-game holiday tourney at Indianapolis this week.

Butler was led by Nnaemaka Anene’s 15 points. Adam Ney added 14 points and Marcus Newell 11.
