Star of yesteryear
Dot Staton has been bowling for 58 years. Staton was a director on the Women’s Bowling Association board for several years and has served as president and secretary/treasurer of several leagues.
Staton bowled in the Women’s Industrial League on Thursday nights at Eastern Lanes. Her highest average is 184, highest game is 278 and her highest series is 688.
She bowled her first 600 series around 1960 and is a frequent member of the 600 Club. Her Baker’s Funeral Home team has won the women’s city tournament, and Staton has partnered with Stella Hatfield to win in doubles.
Meritorious service
A bowling association member for 39 years, Roberta Fisher became a director on the local Women’s Bowling Association board, and was recommended for the post by Louis Wyatt in 1982.
Working on several committees and going to the state bowling convention several times, Fisher became treasurer in 2000, but resigned in 2005 due to increased responsibilities with her job. She has served as secretary/treasurer for several leagues.
Fisher joined her first adult league at Sports Bowl — the Sorg Paper Company League — right after she graduated from high school, and has continued ever since.
Her highest average is a 175, highest game is a 268 and highest series is a 661. She scored her first 600 series in 1970.
Star of today
Edee Spanel has been a member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress and the U.S. Bowling Congress for 15 years. She started bowling at the age of 4 in the youth leagues and continued until she was 16.
Her highest average in a league is a 213, her highest game is 299, and her highest series is a 771. She is a member of the 600 Club and 700 Club.
Spanel has placed first in team in the women’s city tournament and has won doubles with her partner and mother, hall-of-fame member Cookie Butler. Spanel’s Wednesday night team in the Liberty Belles League at Eastern Lanes holds the city team scoring record.
The sold-out banquet will be held Saturday at the Forest Hills Country Club in Middletown.
