HAMILTON — The best archers in the world are coming to Butler County.

The 125th U.S. National Target Championships will be Aug. 3-8 at Joyce Park

The Cincinnati Junior Olympians is the host club for the event, which will feature more than 400 archers from the United States, Taiwan, Canada, Korea, Kazakhstan and Australia.

“It’s a big opportunity for Hamilton and Butler County,” said Darrell Pace, president of the Cincinnati Junior Olympians and assistant tournament director. “How often does a national event come to this town? Name them. We’ve got a big family of archers in the tri-state area.”

Competition divisions feature men and women; compound and recurve; and boys and girls. The oldest competitor is 80 years old, while the youngest is 10 years old.

“It’s a good spectacle for the area to come and see,” said Pace, a two-time Olympic gold medalist. “It’s a privilege to get the nationals in your town. With our archery history, it was a draw.”

The championships were previously held at Colorado Springs, but USA Archery decided to move them here for the 2009 event.

“The added benefit is that we will be in a proven location for maximizing participation,” Denise Parker, USA Archery CEO, said in a release. “We have always done well when the nationals are held in Ohio, and in a year where the economy is weak, it will be good to be within driving distance of many of our members.”
