MASON — The LPGA Futures Tour is back in the area for the fifth straight year.
The Teva Championship — part of the LPGA’s developmental tour — kicks off Friday at the Golf Center at Kings Island in Mason and runs through Sunday for the 54-hole event.
The action begins at 7:30 a.m. each day.
“We’re very excited to have the Teva Championship back here in Greater Cincinnati,” tournament director Abby Pearson said. “The Golf Center is a wonderful facility to host this event. With the support from the fans, volunteers and sponsors, we couldn’t be more excited about this week.”
The purse for the tournament is $135,000, with the winner taking home $18,900 and the runner-up $13,500.
The field will start with 150 players, with a cut after 36 holes to the low 70 scores and ties. Middletown’s Carling Coffing is expected to play, as well as 2009 champion Whitney Wade of Glasgow, Ky.
“We are the highest purse on the tournament schedule, so a lot of them are excited,” Pearson said. “It’s a big opportunity to play at a great golf course and potentially make a lot of money. It’s been my goal in the five years to make this the best event on the tournament schedule, and from the players’ perspective, we’ve been successful at that.”
Admission for adults is $10 per day, and a three-day pass is $25. Children ages 15 and younger are free with a paying adult. Parking is free.
“These are the rising stars for the LPGA,” Pearson said. “They’re right in your backyard this weekend, and fans can come watch them on their way. ... The diversity of the players and the level of talent we have this year is phenomenal.”
