The Basketball Tournament: Cunningham bucket lifts Red Scare into quarterfinals

UD alumni team will play at 9 p.m. Friday

The Red Scare scored its second upset in as many nights in The Basketball Tournament, topping No. 1 seed The Money Team 83-81 in the Dayton Region final Wednesday at UD Arena.

This is the first time the Red Scare has won three games in the TBT. It improved to 8-3 in four tournament appearances.

The Red Scare, a team made up mostly of Dayton Flyers alumni, was led by Darrell Davis with 18 points. Scoochie Smith added 15 points. Jordan Sibert and Ryan Mikesell had 12 apiece.

Davis tied the game at 81 with a free throw and the Red Scare won it on Josh Cunningham’s bucket inside. The Elam Ending target was 82.

The Red Scare will play the West Virginia Region champion, Best Virginia, a team of WVU alumns at 9 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals at UD Arena. Best Virginia beat the Bucketneers 63-62 on Wednesday.

The Red Scare dug another early hole, falling behind 14-2, but answered with a 7-0 run. They led 39-37 at halftime.

The Red Scare made 5 of 12 3-pointers in the half. Darrell Davis led the team with 10 points. Jordan Sibert, who hit the game-ending 3-pointer Tuesday in a 62-56 victory against the second-seeded Golden Eagles, scored nine points in the half.
