In Saturday’s nightcap, it’s Toledo Whitmer (14-0) vs. Cincinnati Moeller (11-3) in the D-I title game at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium.
TCC and Whitmer are both members of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. Toledo metro teams have played in just four state title games. TCC won the D-II title in 2005. Toledo St. Francis DeSales also won a D-I title in 1984.
“To have two teams come out in the top two divisions is a pretty big deal, especially for this area,” Central Catholic coach Greg Dempsey said on Monday. “It gives our northwest Ohio football even a bump up, which I think has been getting better over the few years.”
Ironically, Whitmer put a 42-0 thumping on TCC in Week 10.
“After watching what Whitmer has done to people the last couple of weeks, it’s lessened some of the questions that I get about that game around town,” Dempsey said. “It’s been good on that level.”
St. Francis defeated Centerville 14-11 in a 1984 D-I state semifinal at Welcome Stadium.
No Dayton-area team has won a D-I title. Trotwood-Madison is the defending D-II champ.
It's a number's game: When Colwater (14-0) plays Kirtland (14-0) in Saturday's D-V title game at Massillon, it'll be a rare rematch from the 2011 title game that Kirtland won, 28.7. Even better, the teams were ranked 1-2 in the final state rankings.
It’ll be the fourth staight state title game for Coldwater, the seventh program in Ohio history to do that. Newark Catholic went to eight consecutive title games from 1980-87 and Cleveland St. Ignatius six from 1991-96.
