Following a district final defeat of Milford, the Trice family sped to Chicago to catch the Big Ten tourney final in which Wisconsin beat MSU in overtime. Following last weekend’s regional final defeat of Springfield the Trice family motored to Charlotte, N.C., to catch the Virginia upset.
Wayne (24-4) plays defending Division I state champ Lakewood St. Edward (21-5) in a state semifinal at Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center at 8:30 p.m. Friday. About 90 minutes later MSU will play Oklahoma at Syracuse, N.Y.
If those Trice teams advance, the family will take its own red-eye to the Carrier Dome for Sunday’s game.
“I told Travis what he’s got to do is get to Sunday so we can head to Syracuse on Sunday after we take care of our business,” his father said earlier this week.
Trice’s second son, senior D’Mitrik Trice, is a key point player for the Warriors. If Wayne beats St. Ed, it’ll play in Saturday’s state championship against the Garfield Heights/Westerville South winner at 8:30 p.m.
- This is the ninth straight year the Ohio High School Athletic Association will honor six former athletes into its Circle of Champions program.
In Saturday’s D-IV title game at 10:30 a.m. Lisa Cline, Chris “Beanie” Wells and Troy Smith will be honored. In the D-II title game at 4:30 p.m. Bob Golic, Randy Gradishar and Lou Holtz will be honored.
Individuals are selected for having played prominent roles in the history of Ohio high school sports.
- Columbus Walnut Ridge is back in the final four for the first time since beating Dunbar to win the 1971 Class AAA state title. If both Ridge and Dunbar win their semifinals today, they'll meet for the title in a rematch of that '71 championship game.
- Dunbar is the last Dayton-area team to win a boys big-school championship. The Wolverines beat nemesis Canton McKinley 70-65 in the Class AAA title game at UD Arena in 1987.
