These funnels normally do not touch down to land, Collura added.
Some question how to tell these landspout funnels apart from more dangerous, severe funnels related to a tornado.
Tornadoes or violent weather are more associated with thunderstorms or organized storms, Collura said. “Harmless funnels” usually occur during relatively fair weather, she added.
The landspout funnels we have encountered this year so far in our area have been very thin, almost pencil or rope-like, added Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson.
The thinner the funnel, the less likely it will have winds that cause damage or harm, he said.
Just after 5:15 p.m., Englewood Police reported sighting what they felt was a dark funnel shaped cloud similar to what a tornado might look like. Almost immediately, dozens of calls came into the police station and media outlets.
The National Weather Service did not issue any type of warning due to the formation of the landspout funnel.
