Aimia acquires tech provider

A Canadian firm with an office in Dayton has acquired a retail loyalty technology provider, according to company officials.

Aimia, a $2 billion loyalty management company, has acquired Delaware-based Smart Button for about $18 million. The purchase is part of Montreal-based Aimia’s global growth strategy, strengthening its presence in the U.S. retail loyalty market, officials said.

Aimia in August 2012 acquired Dayton-based Excellence in Motivation Inc., a provider of employee performance incentives and business-improvement strategies for companies, for about $28 million. EIM has since re-branded to Aimia.

Officials said the acquisition of Smart Button will increase the breadth and depth of Aimia’s loyalty product and client portfolio. Smart Button’s retail portfolio includes such well-known brands as Hot Topic, Aeropostale and KOA. The company has 10 employees, according to an Aimia spokeswoman.

Aimia employs more more than 4,000 people in more than 20 countries worldwide.
