Amazon expands again in Ohio: What we know about the 1,500 new jobs

Amazon continues to rapidly expand across Ohio.

The company announced Monday it will build its latest facility, a fulfillment center, in central Ohio and more facilities are on the way, including a facility in southwest Ohio.

Here’s what we know about the internet retail giant’s expansion plans: Inc. already has more than 6,000 employees in Ohio. The newest facility will bring an additional 1,500 jobs by the end of 2019, according to Amazon. Employees at the 855,000-square-foot facility will pack and ship items such as electronics, books, housewares and toys, according to Amazon.

Amazon’s new fulfillment center will be located between Springfield and Columbus on Interstate 70 in West Jefferson, a village in Madison County.

West Jefferson has a population of 4,222, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

“We’re excited that Amazon is building a new fulfillment center in West Jefferson, which will help us build a stronger community for all,” said West Jefferson Mayor Ray Martin in a statement. “We’re proud of the business climate we have in West Jefferson, which is very attractive to industry leaders like Amazon.”

Amazon already has Ohio fulfillment centers in Etna and Obetz. The company will launch additional fulfillment centers in North Randall and Monroe by the end of this year. A facility in Euclid is expected to open in 2019.

The center in Monroe is expected to bring another 1,000 jobs.

“We are excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in West Jefferson, and to continue innovating in Ohio – a state committed to providing great opportunities for jobs and customer experience,” said Mark Stewart, Amazon’s Vice President of North America Customer Fulfillment, in a written statement.
