Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield makes Ohio leadership changes

The state’s larger commercial health insurer Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio announced Tuesday a new leadership structure.

Erin Hoeflinger, president of Anthem in Ohio, has named John Cooper vice president for Anthem’s Individual and Small Group (companies with 1 to 99 employees) market, and Tim Schmalz vice president for the Large Group (100 plus) market.

Anthem previously organized its business regionally.

The change will help prepare the insurer for opportunities and challenges anticipated with health care reform, officials said.

Cooper was most recently regional vice president of sales for northern Ohio, and has more than 20 years of sales, marketing and management experience across all market segments including 14 years with Anthem in Maine and Ohio.

Schmalz most recently had the position of regional vice president of sales for Anthem’s southern Ohio markets, managing sales functions in the greater Cincinnati and Dayton markets, as well as new sales activities and retention of existing customers. He has been with Anthem more than 15 years.

In making the changes, Anthem also named three new regional vice presidents: Kevin Hinkle for central; Scott Misischia, northern; and Marcus Taylor, southern Ohio. These regional leads will be “on the ground” in their respective markets and continue to work on a day-to-day basis driving the company’s broker and client relationships, Anthem officials said.

“This new organization will allow for continued focus on our regional presence along with a new concentration on statewide strategy development and process improvement,” said Hoeflinger in a statement.

Anthem’s Ohio headquarters are located in Deerfield Twp., in Warren County.
