Appleton reports higher net income

APPLETON, Wisc.— Appleton Papers reported net income of $7.2 million for the second quarter of 2009, well above the $42.7 million net loss the paper maker reported in the second quarter of 2008, and above the nearly $1.2 million the company reported for the first quarter of 2009.

Appleton reported net sales of $213.4 million for the quarter that ended July 5, 2009, compared to net sales of $250.1 million for the same quarter in 2008, a decrease of 14.7 percent.

“The decrease was largely due to the continued economic slowdown which negatively impacted shipment volumes worldwide,” the company said Monday Aug. 10.

Operating income of $18.3 million was recorded, compared to operating income of $10.4 million in last year’s second quarter.

Net sales for the first six months of 2009 were put at $426 million, a fall of 12.5 percent compared to first-half sales in 2008 of $486.7 million.

The employee-owned company has some 400 workers at its West Carrollton mill.
