GE Aviation has landed a $4.1 million with the U.S. Army to develop silicon carbide-based power electronics for ground vehicles, the company said.

The two-year contract will produce a prototype in 2018. The deal will bring work to GE Aviation’s Pompano Beach, Florida facility and the GE EPIS Center in Dayton where the technology is expected to undergo testing, said company spokeswoman Jennifer Villarreal.

Silicon carbide and high-density packaging eliminate the need for an electronic cooling system, GE said in a statement.

The contract marks GE Aviation’s fifth with U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren, Mich., to develop next generation electrical power vehicle technology, the company said.
