Back-to-school shopping the smart way

John North is president of the Dayton Better Business Bureau.

The buzz of the bell will signify the end of summer and the start of the school year for millions of children. As students head back to school, parents will be looking for bargains when it comes to back-to-school supplies. Your Better Business Bureau can help you stick to a budget.

According to The National Retail Federation, $72.5 billion was spent on back-to-school spending in 2013. In 2012, $688 was spent per child, while last year about $634 was spent on back-to-school supplies. While last year’s spending was down from 2012, recent economic growth and rising consumer confidence are reasons for optimism this year.

When shopping for back-to-school supplies, your Better Business Bureau offers tips on shopping wisely:

• Set a budget. Make a shopping list with your child and stick to it.

• Take inventory. Look through last year’s supplies to see what can be used this year.

• Buy basic items (pencils, pens, glue sticks and notebooks) in bulk to save money.

• Ask about refund and exchange policies. Find out if the retailer offers refunds, store credits or if all sales are final. Always keep your receipts and check the stores policy on sale and clearance items.

• Make sure you keep the item’s original packaging. Many retailers won’t accept returns on certain items, like electronics, unless they’re in their original packaging.

• Inquire about restocking fees. Some retailers charge a restocking fee, as much as 20 percent of the original purchase price.

• Beware when shopping online. Check out the physical locations and phone numbers of online merchants. If items need to be returned, check to see if they can be returned to the store or need to be shipped back.

• Monitor Web sites and check local ads for deals. Sign up for alerts from Web sites to keep you in the loop for deals and coupons. Many stores offer student and teacher discounts.

Remember, check with your child’s school to get a list of required supplies and/or clothes for the upcoming school year. Start your shopping early, shop around and compare prices to get the best deals.
