BAE workers can’t follow their old jobs to Maryland

RIVERSIDE — BAE Systems employees who face unemployment when nine financial positions are relocated to the Washington, D.C., area on Oct. 15 haven’t been given the option to move with those jobs.

But they can apply for other jobs within the defense contractor, including other positions at the headquarters of BAE’s Support Solutions business in Rockville, Md., where the financial positions are going, company spokesman Neil Franz said.

The employees who can’t be placed within the company are eligible for severance packages and help finding new jobs, he said.

The financial jobs are being moved out of BAE’s Riverside location at 4032 Linden Ave. to cut costs and improve efficiency within BAE’s support solutions business, Franz said. That unit provides engineering and financial services, technical management and other services to customers.

The company remains committed to the Dayton area with a local work force of about 160 people, most of whom serve customers at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Franz said.

Defense contractors are eliminating thousands of jobs as the Pentagon cuts spending, in light of increasing federal budget deficits.

In southwest Ohio alone, BAE Systems has cut about 200 jobs this year, including 17 early this year in Riverside and nearly 200 at separate operations in Butler County.
