Big Lots shutting down 2 area stores

Big Lots stores in Englewood and Greenville will shut down permanently sometime in the next two weeks, employees in those stores said Thursday.

Employees at both stores said the precise closing dates have not been set, but the stores will likely shut their doors before the end of the year.

Colleen Cleary, spokeswoman for Columbus-based Big Lots, declined to confirm the closings or say how many employees would be affected, saying the company’s policy is to withhold comment on any aspect of store closings. But the two Dayton-area stores appear to be part of a wave of store closings that include locations in Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Florida, based on customer posts on the Big Lots Facebook page.

A sign on the front of the Englewood Big Lots store at 606 Taywood Road in the Northmont Plaza reads, “Goodbyes are never easy. Although this store is closing, we promise that the same great deals are just around the corner.” An accompanying map shows Big Lots stores in Trotwood, Huber Heights and Riverside. Big Lots also operates stores in Piqua, Miamisburg, Kettering, Washington Twp. and Springfield.

Bill Singer, economic development director for the city of Englewood, said, “It’s unfortunate for us when any retailer closes,” but added, “That’s a great location at Taywood and Main streets, centrally located and near a lot of homes.

“Hopefully, we’ll find a new tenant quickly to fill the space.”

Earlier this month, Big Lots reported a loss from continuing operations of $3.1 million, or 6 cents a share, for its third quarter of fiscal 2014 that ended Nov. 1, compared to a 7-cents-per-loss over the same period last year. Net sales from continuing operations for the third quarter increased 0.2 percent, and same-store sales increased 1.4 percent for the quarter.
