California utility giant selects Teradata

One of the nation’s largest combined natural gas and electric utilities has selected Miami Twp.-based data warehousing company Teradata to provide it with “smart meter” high-volume data analytics, according to a media release.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) said its goal is to leverage its investment in nearly 10 million electric and natural gas smart meters by using the data generated to better support its customers and operations.

“Because of our established SmartMeter network, we have a large volume of new data that gives us unprecedented insight into our grid,” said Michael Glass, PG&E’s director of information technology, in a statement.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PG&E provides natural gas and electric service to about 15 million people throughout a 70,000-square-mile service area in northern and central California. The company has about 20,000 employees.

Teradata has about 350 employees at its world headquarters in Miami Twp.
