Central Ohio distribution site to lay off 68

A year after Ellett Brothers LLC acquired a Bellefontaine distribution operation, the company is shrinking it, resulting in 68 planned layoffs.

In a recent letter to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Ellett Brothers/United Sporting Cos. said it intends to enact a permanent mass layoff at 1 Hunter Place.

“Although Ellett Brothers, LLC will continue to exist, it will be a significantly smaller organization,” the company said.

The first separations are planned June 30, with “additional layoffs” to follow in stages, the letter says, “depending upon the need for workers during the transition period.”

In May 2018, Ellett Brothers acquired the assets of AcuSport, a distributor of shooting and hunting products, which operated at the time at 1 Hunter Place.

AcuSport filed last spring for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection before being acquired by Ellett Brothers LLC, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Sporting Cos.

“United Sporting Cos. is pleased to be acquiring the state-of-the-art distribution capabilities of AcuSport and to provide employment to a significant number of its employees,” Brad Johnson, United Sporting chief executive, said in a release last year.
