Choosing a kitchen designer to upgrade space

John North is president of the Dayton Better Business Bureau.

The average cost of a kitchen remodel is $15,000 to $35,000. Every year, many homeowners are looking to give their kitchen a facelift. If you’re not much of a designer, then hiring a professional kitchen designer may be what you need. Your Better Business Bureau offers tips for finding a legitimate, trustworthy kitchen designer.

A certified kitchen designer, will develop efficient, cost-effective designs and implement those designs to create brand new, aesthetically appealing and functional kitchens. They’ll manipulate lighting, colors and shapes to accentuate key features and diminish eyesores. A designer, should have good communication skills to lead multiple workers in the implementation of the plan.

When looking for a kitchen designer, your BBB offers these tips:

• Get recommendations from family and friends. If they’re pleased with a designer, most likely you’ll be too.

• Ask for references and call them.

• Create a budget and stick to it.

• Get a written contract on company letterhead, detailing everything agreed upon, including timeline, payment schedule, warranties and guarantees, etc.

• Consider the kitchen designer’s reputation, years of services and services provided.

• Interview several candidates. Look at portfolios of their work. Arrange to see some of their work in person. This will give you an idea of the scale of rooms they’ve worked in and the types of ideas they’ve implemented.

• Make sure you feel comfortable with the kitchen designer.

• Determine if the designer belongs to a professional organization such as the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Professional organizations typically offer continuing education.

• Draw up a plan. Show the dimensions and layout of your existing space and make a mock-up of what you’re envisioning. This may help a designer better understand the scale of your project.

Remember, there are several types of kitchen designers. An architect, an interior designer and a designer/builder can also help with your kitchen remodel or design. The scope of your project will help you decide which kind of professional to consult. Many design professionals are willing to review existing designs and make suggestions for an hourly consultation fee. Do your homework. Know what features you want and don’t want.
