Springboro City Council is scheduled Thursday to consider the purchase of 6.8 acres of land where the former Springboro IGA sits at the intersection of Ohio 73 and Ohio 741.

The Springboro IGA grocery, which was founded in 1958, shut down in early December affecting 20 employees.

The city plans to redevelop the intersection for better traffic flow after buying the land from Preston & Preston.

Doug Preston, whose father was the IGA store’s founder, owns the shopping center that houses the grocery store. Preston told WHIO there’s a chance he’ll reopen in a smaller facility, but no decision has been made.

In the same shopping center, family-owned Springboro Hardware closed its doors March 31 after more than seven decades in business.

Springboro meets in work session at 6 p.m. Thursday and in formal session at 7 p.m. at city hall, 320 W. Central Ave. in Springboro. For information, call 937-748-4343.
