Clinton commissioners approve hospital sale

WILMINGTON — Clinton County commissioners voted Wednesday, May 19, to sell the county’s hospital and related assets to for-profit RegionalCare Hospital Partners of Brentwood, Tenn.

The hospital will pay $82 million for CMH Regional Health System. After debts are paid, the county expects to receive a cash payment of $54.56 million from the sale of the hospital and its assets, county Commissioner Mike Curry said. RegionalCare also has committed to:

• spend $60 million over the next decade in capital improvements to the hospital;

• spend $15 million to recruit new physicians;

• contribute $500,000 to the Clinton County YMCA, $500,000 to Clinton County’s economic development department, and $200,000 in services to uninsured prisoners at Clinton County’s jail.

The commissioners had received four other bids, including one from Kettering Health Network, whose bid was in partnership with for-profit Health Management Associates Inc. of Florida.

An affiliation wasn’t feasible, and Curry said the question became, “Did we want a county hospital or a hospital in the county?”
