Ways to stay financially fit this year

As 2013 has come and gone, 2014 provides a new start and New Year’s resolutions for you to consider when it comes to your money. Your Better Business Bureau offers help on keeping you and your money safe from scammers and put you in a better place financially in 2014.

According to the U.S. Federal Reserve, in 2013, Americans owed more than $11 trillion in debt. Of that total, Americans owe more than $856 billion in credit card debt, almost $8 trillion in mortgages and $1,038 billion in student loans, an increase of 12 percent from 2012. The average household has more than $15,000 in credit card debt.

Many people will do anything to get out of debt, sometimes falling for scams, digging themselves deeper into debt. Your Better Business Bureau offers these financial tips to keep you safe in 2014:

• Do your homework. Check with your BBB before you do business with someone.

• Avoid work-at-home offers. Scammers will target those desperate to find work. Trustworthy companies won’t charge you for materials, training or recruiting.

• Read the fine print. Beware of unsolicited notifications claiming you’ve won money or a prize. Prizes are free.

• Keep your computer safe. Update your virus protection. Also, check to make sure sites are secure. Look for a lock symbol at the bottom of your browser or “https” in front of a website address.

• Never wire money to someone you don’t know. Once you’ve wired the money, it’s most likely gone forever.

• Never give out personal information. Keep credit card, bank account and social security numbers to yourself.

• Shred important documents. Items, such as tax, credit card and other important financial documents, should be shredded to avoid identity theft.

• Watch for check fraud. Technology has made it easier for scammers to create phony checks. Be skeptical of someone saying you’ve won the lottery or another contest, most likely it’s a scam. Never cash a check sent to you asking you to cash or deposit it and wire money to the sender. These checks are usually counterfeit.

• Get everything in writing. Don’t sign anything until it’s carefully looked over.

Remember, start by making a budget for 2014 and stick to it. Review your spending habits from year to year or month to month and figure out what you can do with or without.
