Corn, soybean crops beat record forecasts

Ohio’s corn and soybean crops exceeded even the record-setting forecasts, according to data out this month from the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The state’s average corn yield now is projected to be 174 bushels per acre, up from 166 bushels in the November forecast. Both numbers shattered the old yield record of 159 bushels per acre set in 2006.

The updated numbers also would mean Ohio’s overall corn for grain production for 2009 — 546.3 million bushels — would edge out the old record of 541.5 million bushels in 2007.

Ohio’s average soybean yield also was revised upward 1 bushel to 49 bushels per acre in 2009. Total production of 222 million bushels also is a record and is up 38 percent from 2008.

Corn and soybean production nationwide also was the largest on record.
