Michaels is working with federal law enforcement and conducting an investigation with the help of third-party data security experts to establish the facts, officials said.
“We are concerned there may have been a data security attack on Michaels that may have affected our customers’ payment card information and we are taking aggressive action to determine the nature and scope of the issue,” said Chuck Rubin, the company’s chief executive, in a statement.
The company has not confirmed a compromise to its systems, but is alerting customers so they can take steps to protect themselves by reviewing their account statements for unauthorized charges, he said.
Michaels will post information related to the investigation on its website at michaels.com.
