Cyber Security Awareness Month kicks off

According to the National Consumers League, more than 25 million Americans become fraud victims every year. To recognize the importance of staying safe online, the month of October is dedicated to engage and educate the public through events and initiatives to raise awareness about cyber security as it’s the 10th annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Online scams are usually the result of poor online security as hackers and Internet scammers refine their techniques and find new ways to trick you into revealing personal information. To help you make your online experience safe and enjoyable, your Better Business Bureau offers some computer tips:

• Use strong passwords, like a combination of numbers with uppercase and lowercase letters. If your computer is used by others, make sure each user has his or her own password. Change your password every 90 days and never share it.

• Lock your computer when you’re away, even for a few minutes.

• Update your computer’s anti-virus protection, install new software updates and keep your firewall up-to-date.

• Don’t give out clues you’ll be away from home. Announcing to friends on social media that you’re going on vacation could be an open invitation to thieves.

• Beware of suspicious e-mails. When in doubt, delete.

• Limit personal information on social media sites and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information. Never open attachments or respond to online requests for personal information from someone you don’t know.

• Consider logging off the Internet when you’re not using it. It may be convenient to stay connected, but it could be easy access to hackers. Also, turn off your computer or modem whenever you’re not online.

• Backup your information in a secure location in case your computer is infected.

• Be wary of too-good-to-be-true advertising.
