Dayton to add $1 million in cost to airport lobby improvement project

DAYTON — The City Commission will be asked on Wednesday to approve a $1 million addition to a Dayton International Airport lobby improvement project for replacing old conveyor belts and extending a service agreement for a new baggage-handling system.

The change order would increase Dayton’s overall cost of the ongoing improvement of the terminal building’s ticketing lobby to $14.8 million, according to the city administration. The project includes replacing the airport’s old baggage screening and handling systems, and relocating the screening system behind the wall to make more room for the public in the ticketing lobby.

The change order is to authorize replacement of conveyor belts, located behind airline ticket counters, that have exceeded their useful life span, according to the city administration. It would also extend until the end of 2011 a maintenance service agreement for a new baggage system being installed at the airport.

A favorable bid from the contractor, Messer Construction Inc., more than a year ago for the project left a surplus that can be used for the additional tasks, city officials said in a letter summarizing the work.

The project is being paid for by airport-generated revenues and fees that passengers pay to finance federally approved security and capacity improvement projects at airports.
