Building permits are a sign of a new house about to be built.
“The influence of historic low mortgage interest rates, great values and some pent up demand will continue to bring improvement to the new home market,” said Walt Hibner, executive director of the home builders group, in a statement with the release.
Including apartments and condos, 617 building permits have been issued through May in Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties. That’s unchanged from the same time period last year, the builders association said.
However, the increased building activity this year is not a third of what it used to be. For the same five months, the peak was at the end of May 2004 when builders were issued 2,324 permits in the area for housing construction.
The housing development Carriage Trails in the Miami County part of Huber Heights continues to be the area’s most active. From January through May, builders Ryan Homes and Inverness Homes had been issued 38 building permits there, also according to the Dayton builders group.
Additionally, Dayton’s housing market saw in May the highest sales of existing homes in two years, according to Dayton Area Board of Realtors.
