Dayton VA plans low-income senior housing unit

Complex will have 67 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Dayton VA Medical Center officials on Monday are expected to announce the establishment of a new low-income senior housing unit for veterans and their families on the Dayton VA campus.

St. Mary Development Corp. of Dayton will operate Lyon’s Place II on six acres of Dayton VA land. Officials said the new 67-unit complex will provide secure and affordable one- and two-bedroom apartments for independent seniors age 62 and older.

Priority placement will be offered for veterans.

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, on Friday announced a $584,000 grant to St. Mary to support the nonprofit’s efforts to create affordable housing in southwest Ohio.

Turner is among the invited guests for a news conference Monday at the Dayton VA to announce the partnership and initiation of a lease with St. Mary.

St. Mary in November was notified that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will make a $4.6 million loan available that the nonprofit can use to help finance the $6.5 million project.

The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs is preparing to build 5,400 residential units at VA hospitals across the country, including 310 at the Dayton VA, in an effort to reduce homelessness among military veterans.

The agency in November said it plans to lease vacant or underused parcels of land to private developers who will build the housing on VA medical center campus so that homeless, disabled or elderly vets who live there will have easy access to VA care and treatment.

The Dayton VA is offering an additional 14 acres of land on the medical center’s campus along U.S. 35 and Gettysburg Avenue for development.
