Defense contractor SAIC expanding work force in Beavercreek, Springfield

SAIC plans 215 new jobs in three years and a 90,000 square-foot building next year.

About SAIC

Headquarters: McLean, Va.

Annual revenues: $11 billion.

Work force: 45,000.

Customers: Mostly federal, state and local government agencies, some commercial clients.

Science Applications International Corp., a Fortune 500 company that broadly serves the federal government, plans to expand its area work force by at least 215 people to serve Wright-Patterson Air Force Base agencies and unmanned aircraft development.

The expansion, announced Monday, is contingent on state financial support, officials said. State tax credits were approved Monday and funding from Ohio’s technology-nurturing Third Frontier program were under consideration, the Dayton Development Coalition said.

SAIC’s expansion would boost the Dayton area’s long-term effort to build itself as a center of aerospace expertise and research.

The company will either move the jobs into this area from its Virginia operations or hire people within the next three years to better serve the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson and an unmanned aerial systems program at Springfield Air National Guard Base, SAIC and the coalition said.

The hiring will focus on engineers, scientists, computer programmers and technicians, SAIC officials said.

The company will accommodate the Beavercreek growth for now in its existing building along Interstate 675, said Jeff Hoagland, the Dayton Development Coalition’s executive vice president of operations. SAIC is negotiating with Mills-Morgan Development to build a 90,000-square-foot building that SAIC would occupy in 2012 to handle the growing work force, Hoagland said.

The hiring or transferring in engineers, scientists, computer programmers and technicians will support the needs of the Air Force Research Laboratory and unmanned aerial systems work at Springfield Air National Guard Base, SAIC said Monday. The technology needs of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base were a major lure for the Fortune 500 company, officials said.

About 180 new employees are projected for SAIC’s Beavercreek operations and 35 for the company’s Springfield operation, plus five to be relocated from the Dayton area. The $11 billion-a-year company already employs about 380 in the Dayton region.

The company’s customers include the Defense and Homeland Security departments and civilian agencies. In Springfield, the expansion means a $3.2 million payroll expansion at the Nextedge Research and Applied Technology Park. In Beavercreek, SAIC is working with Mills-Morgan Development on a new corporate home across Interstate 675 from SAIC’s businesses at 4027 and 4031 Col. Glenn Highway.
