DHL, ABX Air parent have new agreements

WILMINGTON — Air Transport Services Group Inc., owner of ABX Air and other cargo-hauling carriers, said it has new long-term agreements to serve the remaining U.S. portion of DHL’s overnight package delivery network.

They include ABX Air’s five-year agreement to operate and support 13 Boeing 767 freighter aircraft for DHL through March 2015, with an option to extend the deal through March 2020. There is also a seven-year agreement between DHL and ATSG’s subsidiary, Cargo Aircraft Management, covering leases for aircraft to be operated for DHL deliveries.

ATSG and DHL on Tuesday, March 30, also announced settlements of related financial issues.

The service for DHL is drastically reduced from recent years, when ABX Air operated DHL’s domestic freight hub at Wilmington Air Park and flew cargo nationwide for DHL. DHL closed its Wilmington hub last year and slashed its U.S. delivery network to include only deliveries between U.S. and international cities.

As a result, ABX Air laid off hundreds of pilots and other company employees at the hub, which had been the region’s largest employer.

ATSG’s subsidiary, Airborne Maintenance & Engineering Services Inc., is under contract to provide maintenance services for the Boeing freighters for at least three years at Wilmington Air Park.
