Trouble signs for Kettering sports bar

KETTERING — The Van Buren Tap Room at 2335 S. Smithville Road has not been open in recent days, and its phone is disconnected.

There is no sign on the tap room’s door alerting customers to any change in the bar’s status. But some contents of the bar have been boxed and stacked in a room near one of its front doors. Attempts to reach the beer bar’s owners by email were unsuccessful.

Gregg Gorsuch, economic development manager for the city of Kettering, said he has received no notification of any change in Van Buren Tap Room’s status. But he said he too has driven past the bar during regular serving hours and noticed there was no activity in or around the business.

The space formerly held Cadillac Jacks Sports Bar & Grill, but morphed into Van Buren Tap Room in April 2012. At that time, Jeff Lockwood — who said his mother, Bev Risner, was the owner of the sports bar — said the new beer bar would offer 14 beers on tap as well as dozens of craft and imported beers in cans and bottles, as well as pool tables, dart boards and 36 televisions.

Extensive renovations at the time included new carpet, new tile, a fresh paint job, updated equipment and a new system for the draft beers. Lockwood said the bar would seat 93 and employ about 15 people.
