Informed of the cuts in recent days, the Troy employees laid off worked in “sales, general and administrative” areas, Martin said.
Martin said the cuts affect less than 2 percent of UTC Aerospace Systems’ approximately 40,000 employees globally, and are confined to the Aerospace Systems division. The total number of layoffs are 500 worldwide.
United Technologies as a whole has more than 200,000 total employees.
Four people in North Carolina are being laid off, according to the Charlotte Observer, and 70 people in Windsor Locks, Conn., according to a newspaper in that state.
Martin said the cuts are the result of the company “assessing” its global workforce and “aligning” employee numbers with business conditions. Asked if further layoffs are possible, Martin said not that he was aware of, but he added, “We continually assess that.”
“When necessary, we make staffing adjustments required to ensure we remain competitive and manage our cost structure,” Martin said.
Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies acquired the Troy aircraft wheels and brakes plant in late July in an $18.4 billion acquisition of Goodrich. The deal included United Technologies assuming nearly $2 billion of Goodrich debt.
Shares of United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) rose $1.33 to $76.58 in trading Monday.
