“We believe it is going to be a great regional draw to Austin Landing and Miami Twp., drawing not only from the Dayton market but also the northern Cincinnati market,” said Greg Rogers, assistant township administrator. Field & Stream also will attract other retailers to the development, he said.
The number of new jobs created by the project was not available Friday. The Field & Stream store that opened in October in Northern Kentucky reportedly added about 150 jobs.
Township officials said the Austin Landing store, along with another in Columbus, will be the first to open in Ohio. There are two existing Field & Stream locations in Crescent Springs, Ky., and Cranberry Twp., Penn.
Field & Stream is owned by Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. The specialty retailer sells equipment for outdoor activities that include archery, hunting, fishing and camping. The store also sells apparel, including footwear.
Dick’s Sporting Goods officials could not be reached for comment. The company has announced plans to grow Field & Stream to 55 stores and $750 million in revenues by 2017.
The company’s construction proposal will have to go through the planning and zoning process, as well as building regulations, Rogers said. The store is expected to break ground in March and open in the fall.
Miami Twp. has been working on the project for several months with developer RG Properties, said Chris Snyder, the township’s assistant planning director.
Officials said the Field & Stream store, along with recent investments in an expanded regional bikeway system and bicycle hub at Austin Landing, fits well with the township’s efforts to market the development to recreational enthusiasts.
Austin Landing already is home to Teradata’s headquarters, a Hilton Garden Inn, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, a Kroger supermarket, and Kohl’s and HomeGoods stores.
