Former astronaut to speak at AFIT symposium

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Former astronaut Guion Bluford Jr., now the head of a Cleveland aerospace business consulting firm, is to speak at the Air Force Institute of Technology’s annual Heritage Symposium.

The event is scheduled Sept. 21-22 at the AFIT campus on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Bluford, a retired Air Force colonel and fighter pilot, received a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from AFIT in 1974 and a doctorate in that field from AFIT in 1978.

He became an astronaut in 1979. During 15 years with NASA, he flew on four space shuttle missions and logged 688 hours in space. He is founder and president of Aerospace Technology Group in Cleveland.

Speakers for the September event also include Lt. Gen. Allen Peck, commander of Air University, which provides Air Force education in air, space and cyberspace battle techniques. Peck received an AFIT master’s degree in operations research in 1985.
