Health fraud scams pop up everywhere, including television and the Internet targeting those who are desperate to find anything to treat or cure their health issues. These scams come in all forms such, as fraudulent billing, unnecessary services or prescriptions, kickbacks, duplicate claims, etc.
To protect yourself and loved ones from these schemes, your BBB suggests these tips:
• Don’t rely on unproven products.
• Remember products for weight loss, sexual performance and body building may contain harmful drugs or chemicals not listed on the label.
• Don’t be fooled by product claims that say they cure a wide range of unrelated diseases. No one product can treat or cure many different illnesses.
• Never give out personal information over the phone, especially if it is from an unsolicited caller. If consumers receive a suspicious phone call, they should hang up immediately.
• Remind elderly family members that Medicare will never call to ask for sensitive personal financial information. If you suspect fraud, contact your local police or the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General at 800-HHS-TIPS.
