Huffy designing bike line for independent shops

Huffy Bicycles is designing a line of bikes to be sold only at independent stores.

The new line builds on the Miami Twp.-based company’s business strategy to make deals with mom-and-pop bike dealers to double as Huffy service shops and distribution centers.

The “Batch Bicycles” line is not designed yet but will debut at Interbike Marketweek, Sept. 14-20. The line will include a comfort bike, a commuter model, a beach cruiser, a mountain bike, and kid’s bikes.

The bikes will be shipped to the independent shops within two to three days after they are bought online.

Huffy recently opened a new office in Miami Twp. The company, which dates back 125 years in the Dayton area, moved from Centerville into an office at 8877 Gander Creek with 40 percent more space.

“Dealers told me there are opportunities for incremental business, in between the high end of mass market bikes, and the low end of specialty bikes,” Huffy’s CEO Bill Smith said in a statement. “Huffy is in a unique position to leverage its strengths and provide that.”

In October, Smith had said while speaking at a Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce event that the company has had to adapt its business model for an e-commerce world.

Besides the deals with independent bike dealers to serve as distribution centers for online sales, the company’s strategy includes a new Ebay store and easy-to-assemble bikes, which are better suited for selling online and shipping.
