“In an organization of 10,000 employees, jobs are being shifted, realigned, or sometimes staffing is reduced based on (patient) volumes or budgetary issues,” spokeswoman Elizabeth Long said. “That’s happening on a regular basis.”
The cuts come three weeks after another Kettering Health Network hospital, Greene Memorial in Xenia, announced it was closing its inpatient psychiatric and rehabilitation services.
A former worker in the inpatient psychiatric unit estimated that 18 employees worked in that unit, though it wasn’t clear how many of them were laid off or found other jobs within the network.
Kettering Health Network did not refute that number.
KHN is referring future inpatient psychiatric cases from the area to other KHN facilities, including Kettering Behavioral Medicine Center and Grandview Medical Center.
A KHN executive acknowledged in December that revenues weren’t at projected levels, prompting a directive to the leadership at KHN hospitals to make sure expenses were in line with revenues.
In announcing the Greene Memorial service reduction in early January, KHN said there would be “additional realignments” of staff, and said other KHN hospitals were “searching for opportunities to streamline and reduce expenses.”
