Patients who go to the Sycamore location and are found to need hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be referred for treatment at Kettering Medical Center or the base.
The base is home to the largest hyperbaric chamber in the country in terms of capacity; it can treat up to 22 people at the same time. Open to all patients, not just the military, the 10-year-old Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center is under the direction of Kettering Medical Center, and is said to be the only Ohio center accredited by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society.
Emergency hyperbaric treatment usually is needed as a result of carbon monoxide exposure. Hyperbaric treatment also helps heal wounds by improving oxygen delivery to damaged areas through a series of treatments.
