Local auto dealer expands

Jeff Schmitt Autogroup opening Beavercreek, Miamisburg dealerships.

Next month Jeff Schmitt Autogroup will celebrate the grand openings of its Beavercreek Cadillac and Miamisburg Chevrolet dealerships.

The Beavercreek Cadillac celebration will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 4 at 631 S. Orchard Lane. This is the location of the former Roberts Cadillac, which the autogroup bought in 2007, according to Jeff Schmitt. The dealership, which has 55 employees, underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation.

The Chevrolet South celebration will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 3 at 125 S. Gebhart Church Road. The autogroup acquired the dealership, formerly Serra Chevrolet, in November, Schmitt said. The current number of employees at this location is 80.

The autogroup has more than 300 employees at its six locations, Schmitt said.

The Schmitt expansion comes as the number of U.S. auto dealerships is declining. As of July 1, there were 17,614 franchised new car and truck dealerships in the U.S., according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. That compares with 22,250 new car and truck dealerships in January 2000. The U.S. started this year with 17,700 dealerships.

“One of the ... secrets to our success is our dedication to providing great customer service. We also have a large selection of automobiles,” Schmitt said.

By maintaining advertising budgets, “We’ve been fortunate to grow market share.”

Prior to starting his autogroup, Schmitt was a minority partner in the Jack Huelsman dealership and bought out the dealership from Huelsman’s family after Huelsman died in 2000. Jeff Schmitt Autogroup started at its location at 1001 N. Broad St. in Fairborn.
