Each of Sugar Creek’s area locations in West Chester Twp. and the city of Dayton expanded — of the company’s total six sites nationwide — and were awarded a 45 percent tax credit good for six years, according to the DOD. The $1.2 million expansion created 50 new jobs and maintained 75, according to the DOD.
The value of the West Chester location’s credit is approximately $84,245, and requires the business to maintain local operations for at least nine years.
The value of the Dayton site’s credit is $136,436 and also requires the company to remain in business there for nine years. The $3.25 million project is expected to create 79 new jobs and retain more than 405 positions, according to the DOD.
Sugar Creek, founded in Washington Court House, Ohio, in 1966, is one of the largest independent bacon manufacturers with more than 1,200 employees nationwide.
Pierre Foods was awarded Tuesday with a 50 percent, six-year job creation tax credit as a result of its $21.5 million expansion that is said to create 40 jobs and retain nearly 850 more.
Founded in Cincinnati in 1946, Pierre Foods produces beef, pork, chicken and bread products for schools,, food service, retail, vending and convenience store markets, according to its Web site. The company has manufacturing facilities in Ohio, Georgia, South Carolina and in Claremont, N.C.
On July 15, 2008, Pierre Foods filed for voluntary bankruptcy protection — Chapter 11 — with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in order to restructure its existing debt experienced as a result of rising raw material costs, according to a company news release at the time and court records.
It emerged from bankruptcy protection on Dec. 10, 2008, with a new Board of Directors and a new chief executive, William Toler. In the interim, the company maintained operations at each facility.
