The film industry saw what is expected to be its lowest earning summer movie-going season since 2006 — a trend mirrored in a disappointing Labor Day weekend for movie theaters.

Though officials numbers have not been released, estimates expect that this Labor Day weekend will be the lowest earnings for the film industry since 1998, The Associated Press reported. The film industry is likely to bring just over $3.8 billion this summer.

Analysts said weekend performance was poor because of the lack of any new wide releases. “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” came in at the top of the charts — bringing in more than $13 million for the long weekend, followed by “Annabelle: Creation” and “Wind River.”

"There's no sugar coating the fact that this was a very slow labor day weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for comScore, in an interview with The Associated Press. "This was a fitting end to a rough summer."
