Meijer to expand, remodel Kettering store

Meijer has submitted preliminary plans to the city of Kettering to remodel and expand its store at East Stroop Road and Wilmington Pike as the competition for consumers’ grocery-store dollars intensifies in Dayton’s south suburbs.

Meijer’s design plans call for a building expansion of about 4,400 square feet, including the addition of a drive-through window for a pharmacy and a new employee entrance, bringing the store to 204,175 square feet.

The Kettering Planning Commission this week voted to approve the design plans, although additional approvals of building plans will be necessary before renovations can get underway.

Meijer’s renovation plans come on the heels of announcements by the owners of the Town & Country Shopping Center, also on East Stroop Road in Kettering, that its specialty grocery store, Trader Joe’s, will expand early this year by 25 percent, and by Kroger, which has submitted plans to open a large new store in the Cornerstone of Centerville project off Wilmington Pike south of Meijer.

The projects reflect an increasingly competitive grocery-store market in Dayton’s south suburbs. That market includes Dorothy Lane Market, Dot’s Market, Earth Fare, Sam’s Club, Kroger, WalMart, Meijer, and Trader Joe’s, as well as the recently opened Costco Warehouse. And it will soon include a new Whole Foods store in Washington Twp. and a new Fresh Thyme store in Sugarcreek Twp.

A Meijer spokesman said this morning he could not provide details of the project or its estimated timeline.
