New restaurant in the works at former Boulevard Haus

DAYTON — The owners of Blind Bob’s tavern in Dayton’s Oregon District have signed a contract to purchase the former Boulevard Haus restaurant nearby and plan to open a restaurant called Lily’s Bistro there, co-owner Lisa Mendenhall said this morning.

The deal is contingent on court approval because the Boulevard Haus (formerly Cafe Boulevard) property at 329 and 333 E. Fifth St. is in receivership after being foreclosed upon. Dayton attorney Matthew Sorg, the court-appointed receiver responsible for selling the property, has asked Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Dennis J. Adkins to approve the sale. And Mendenhall said she and her husband Robert, who would co-own the property as they do Blind Bob’s, still must obtain financing for the project.

The Mendenhalls purchased the former Nite Owl nightclub at 430 E. Fifth St. four years ago and have turned it into a lunch spot and popular late-night live music destination. Their son Nate Mendenhall manages Blind Bob’s, and their 29-year-old daughter Emily Mendenhall, who currently lives in New Orleans and has worked in restaurants in Chicago and New Orleans, plans to come to Dayton to manage Lily’s Bistro. Robert and Lisa Mendenhall sold their Mason home and moved to the Oregon District last year.

Mike Martin, president of the Oregon District Business Association and also the listing agent for the Boulevard Haus property, said the new owners and their restaurant concept will be a good fit for the entertainment district.

“The Mendenhalls have proven experience as business owners in the Oregon District,” Martin said. “They run a good business, and they care about their employees.” The district, Martin said, “has always been a collection of independent restaurants and locally owned businesses. This new restaurant will just add to that.”

Lisa Mendenhall said the restaurant could open as early as March if details fall into place. She said the family is still deciding on Lily’s Bistro’s menu, hours and other specifics, but said the restaurant will have a mid-level price point “above Blind Bob’s, but not at fine-dining prices.”
