NewPage opens mineral plant in Michigan

Miamisburg-based NewPage and industrial mineral producer Omya have opened a precipitated calcium carbonate plant at NewPage’s paper mill site in Escanaba, Mich., company officials announced.

The Omya plant creates seven new jobs for that community, officials said.

Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is an essential raw material used in the paper-making process. PCC is manufactured using lime and carbon dioxide. It provides key paper properties such as bulk, opacity, brightness and whiteness.

The Escanaba mill previously purchased PCC from another supplier. Officials said having the PCC plant on site will save on transportation costs. The company is purchasing the lime for the PCC manufacturing process from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The on-site plant uses carbon dioxide generated by the Escanaba mill in the process, reducing the environmental impact.

In January, NewPage and Tennessee-based Verso Paper Corp. announced a proposed $1.4 billion merger.

NewPage produces printing and specialty papers and owns paper mills in Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
