Number of FedEx jobs at $18.5M Miami Twp. site still undecided

Construction continues on an $18.5 million FedEx Ground distribution center near Interstate 75, but a company official said the number of workers the site will employ isn't expected to be decided until next year.

Records indicate as many as 200 jobs will be housed at the FedEx Ground South Dayton Facility. A Miami Twp. official — noting the company is "very guarded" with employment figures — said FedEx may employ about twice that many at the 249,506-square-foot site in the Austin Center business district.

Company spokesman David Westrick said FedEx isn’t likely to “determine exact staffing” at the 32-acre Byers Road site until about six months before its scheduled July 2017 opening.

He said factors in deciding the number of jobs — full- and part-time — may depend on the facility’s region, the specific tasks performed there and volume of materials processed.

“There’s no quantitative number that I can share at this time regarding volume, a projected volume or employees in the building,” Westrick said. “We need to have enough people to process the packages we believe will be moving through the building.”

Reports on similarly sized FedEx Ground distribution centers indicate the number of jobs could widely vary.

An Arkansas site set to be completed this month will bring 150 full- and part-time jobs, according to inddist.com. That same organization reported that an Illinois FedEx Ground center that is 181,000 square feet employs 175.

The Miami Twp. facility is among 70 distribution centers FedEx Ground has announced this year, Westrick said. The Byers Road site is expected to have a “wide range of positions,” including managers, clerical and other office staff, and equipment maintenance slots.

Westrick said the company would begin recruiting a few months before opening.

Miami Twp. Administrator Greg Rogers this week said local officials expect “in the neighborhood” of 400 jobs at the site. Community Development Director Chris Snyder noted that the facility could have hundreds of workers on site during a given day.

FedEx Ground has been working with developer Scannell Properties, an Indianapolis developer which in March purchased 28 acres on Byers Road for $1.56 million from Mehland Developers LCC, Montgomery County records show.

Shortly thereafter, Quandel Construction Group of Westerville began work at the site just west of the I-75/I-675 interchange and is in the process of completing the building’s shell.

Township trustees in April approved making a deal with Scannell that would give the township at least $80,000 annually over 10 years.

Payments, which would begin upon occupancy, would increase by $5,000 annually and be capped at $125,000 a year.
