One of the largest U.S. greenhouse farms to open soon north of Dayton

One of the largest greenhouse operations in the U.S. is growing rapidly in Wapakoneta and could result in the creation of more than 400 jobs for the region.

Red Sun Farms in Wapakoneta has planted more than 200,000 seedlings across 20 acres at its second greenhouse farm in the U.S. Future phases are planned with the possibility of reaching 200 acres within the next 7 to 10 years.

Red Sun operates farms in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.

The new facility, which is a “high-tech” greenhouse,” will grow first tomatoes, and could also accommodate peppers, cucumbers or eggplants in the future. The company said the height of the greenhouse is taller than most other facilities, which creates a “natural buffer zone above the plants” that aid with temperature and humidity requirements.

The greenhouse utilizes natural methods for pest control, according to a news release.
