By comparison, online advertised vacancies increased by 49,000 to 4.9 million nationally from mid-December to mid-January when there were 1.57 unemployed workers for each open position, The Conference Board reported.

“In recent months, the trend in the number of online job ads has been flat to slightly rising,” said Gad Levanon, chief economist for North America at The Conference Board.

By sector, ads for managers in professional occupations fell by 1.2 percent last month, while job listings for health care practitioners fell by 1.4 percent. Ads for workers with computer and math skills climbed 23 percent, while postings for office administrators were up 19 percent. Ads for drivers and other transportation occupations also saw a double digit gain of 10 percent.
